Workshop by Evgeny Gerasimov in ArchMoscow exhibition

24.05.2013

Evgeny Gerasimov, one of the leading architects in St. Petersburgh, with the bulk of his well-known projects centering within and around the city's downtown, is giving a lecture on the peculiarities of the complicated local architectural context somewhat resilient to modern urban intrusion. How to approach the task of incorporating new buildings into the existing historical environment in the downtown as well as into the outskirts, with their distinct urban trend in construction, is going to be the focus of the lecture based on the designs and projects that have been devised in his own workshop reflecting the gradual shift in the authour's professional tastes and priorities at work.
‘First of all, architecture is my profession. It is my occupation, my job, my hobby. In this respect I consider myself a happy man because I do what I love, and in this way I earn my living. Come agree, it is what everyone is dreaming about. The three cornerstones of architecture had already been named by Vitruvius long time ago, namely, ‘utility, solidity, beauty', and there is nothing to add to it. I don't believe in the architecture's social mission. As a wise man said, architecture is incapable of changing the way life goes, while life keeps changing architecture to no end or limit. Therefore, its main objective is to serve people, to last long regardless of the whimsical fashion. When the process of creation also brings about some kind of aesthetical satisfaction, then, in my mind, the architect may consider his role fulfilled.'
