The Temple of Saint Ioann from Kronshtadt

There is a Neo-Russian style chapel at the site, built in the beginning of the 2000s by Ivan Knyazev.

The new buildings of the complex, the All-Merciful Saviour cathedral and the clergy house behind it, are located symmetrically with respect to the bisector of the triangular plot formed by the Leninsky and Stachek prospects. The temple greets those entering the city along the Petergofskoye highway, just like the mythic giant Head from «Ruslan and Lyudmila» poem by A. Pushkin. It was this Head image which also inspired the dome shape; the dome resembles an ancient helmet, such shape being characteristic of Novgorod architecture style.

The lower podium floor of the cathedral is to accommodate a baptismal church. The upper part of the temple, square in plane, is topped by the drum of the dome supported by four columns.

Despite a general traditional approach to composition and an adherence to the canon, the design has managed to avoid style imitations. The buildings’ ascetic and minimalistic look is a reference to the church architecture of the Russian North-West, together with its sober geometrical forms and exact proportions giving the whole complex a modern scent.
